Charles Dupuy has captivated audiences in Paris, Boston, New York, Miami, Ottawa and Montreal. He is the celebrated author of Le Coin de l’Histoire, a book series with tremendous success in recent years and remains the most sold book on Haitian history in Haiti and abroad.

The independence of Haiti is one of the most glorious moments in world history. As the second free nation of the western hemisphere and the world’s first black republic, one can say that Vodou played a significant role in the fight against slavery. Vodou is entrenched in the Haitian soul and can be found in Haitian music, popular dances, proverbs, and for the humble masses in all the activities of the daily life, in health and sickness, in joy or in pain. Consider that Haiti has two acts of independence, one in Gonaïves on the 1st of January 1804, and the other with the Africans deities in a meeting known as the Bois Caïman: a ceremony held in the woods, where enslaved Africans swore to live, from the time forward, free or dead. This talk will explore these pivotal moments in Haitian history and highlight important influences of Vodou over time.
